Doug Ruch of San Antonio,Texas spent most of his life working in sales but was initially diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2021;in January 2025 Doug Ruch shockingly learned his prostate cancer had become terminal. And at first the 55 year-old Texan mourned. But then,he turned his focus to the 12 to 18 months doctors say he has left-and decided to spend that time giving back.So he started a GoFundMe,asking people to support his dying wish to volunteer in every single U.S.state.
His childhood trauma and anxiety caused him to overcorrect in his twenties, thirties and 40s,and go after the brass ring.So it made him reflect on the things he missed out on.He said one of his greatest regrets in life is that he didn't spend enough time helping other people and that he spent too much time working and trying to make a lot of money. He describes himself as a bit of a loner with a turbulent childhood who has suffered from lifelong anxiety.
Volunteering has become calming for him.On days where he has volunteer missions,he feels good and he's energized. The happy hormones are flowing. He has taken on many volunteering gigs in soup kitchens, food banks and food pantries.
So far,Ruch has volunteered with food banks, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, old age homes, youth centres and community centres in Texas, California,Colorado,New Mexico. Arizona,Nevada, California,Oregon, Washington,Idaho and Utah.
Volunteering is not just good for the community;it's good for the volunteer, too.In fact, several studies have found links between volunteering or altruism and happiness and health.
