Dogs saved from Korean meat farm to find forever homes in Quebec-Read this story from ctv.com with happy ending
The animals were rescued from a now closed dog meat farm in South Korea by the Humane Society International with assistance from the Montreal SPCA. The dogs will be sent to shelters across the province, with 16 staying in Montreal.
"For the second consecutive year, the Montreal SPCA is pleased to assist HSI/Canada with this important rescue. Our team is eager to meet the 16 dogs and provide them with all the care and individual attention they require. We are relieved that they will soon be placed in loving homes, where they will get the chance to live happy and healthy lives," said Élise Desaulniers, executive director of the Montreal SPCA.
"The dogs will be settling in at the Montreal SPCA where canine behaviour experts, veterinarians and staff will care for them. Many of the dogs are timid and will be seeking patient and calm adoptive families to help them adjust to their new lives. They will become available for adoption December 18 at noon."
The dogs were confined to cramped, barren wire cages with little food and water with little to no protection from the elements.
In South Korea, an estimated 2.5 million dogs are slaughtered for the meat trade annually.
Senior campaign manager for HSI/Canada Ewa Demianowicz said female dogs were kept for years, forced to bear litter and litter of pups so they could be sent off to be slaughtered.
"We are so happy that they will receive that care here in Quebec and that many of the dogs could be in forever homes in time for the holidays" Demianowicz said.
While the dog meat trade is most widespread in China, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Nagaland in northern India, the Montreal SPCA is hoping the closure of this farm in South Korea will help show people there are animals being slaughtered in Canada, living in similar conditions.
"As compassionate that we're being towards these dogs and we're showing so much empathy to them, one thing that we also hope that people will also extend their empathy to the animals that are being farmed here in similar conditions as the dogs were and being slaughtered in horrific ways" SPCA Montreal spokesperson Anita Kapuscinska told CTV Montreal.
"They are all sentient beings and this happens here also in Canada, just not with dogs but other animals who feel pain, have specific individual needs that are not being tended too and we hope people will reflect upon that and show some empathy towards these animals here, all the pigs the chickens and other animals being farmed here as well."

A PhD candidate from New York may not be able to graduate on time after all his research was stolen on a recent trip to Montreal.
Neil Kohan was visiting relatives this past weekend and planning to work on his dissertation in spare moments when someone broke into his car.
The thief stole a backpack containing his laptop, a notebook, and a thumb drive with all his backup material.
"I'm kind of living in the third person right now. This is like an all-time low. I'm not... not too good," said Kohan.
He was finishing his thesis before submitting it for a defence in the spring.
With all his work gone, he will likely have to head back to the lab and redo experiments, delaying graduation by months.
"I'm just devastated right now, I haven't come to terms with it," said Kohan.
His car was parked near the intersection of Drummond St. and Sherbrooke St. on Saturday Nov. 25 when the theft took place in broad daylight.
Montreal police said the thief was caught on surveillance camera around noon.
"They looked at the images and they saw that a suspect was approaching the car, a white man in his 30s with a beard, and he approached the car and left rapidly with the belongings that were inside the car," said SPVM officer Manuel Couture.
Police have yet to make any arrests.
"I drove back up on Sunday and plastered the neighbourhood with reward signs, hoping that I could get someone to come offer it up, no questions asked," said Kohan.
He is offering a $5,000 reward for the return of his research and the other stolen goods.
"Three laptops, my USB drives, my mother-in-law's passports, chargers," said Kohan.
In the meantime he has received supportive messages from concerned Montrealers -- but no word about his research.
Kohan can be reached via email at cloismeg@gmail.com
