An important marker of heart health
It is not very well-known . LP(a) is a significant marker of heart health.
LP(a) stands for lipoprotein (a),It is a type of cholesterol -carrying particle in the blood that is similar to Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL).
About 20% of Canadians in 2025 have elevated LP(a) levels that can cause heart attack and stroke prematurely in otherwise healthy young people.Lp(a) levels are largely determined by genetics and cannot be changed by diet and lifestyle.
If cholesterol particles look like traffic on a highway,LP(a) behaves like Velcro;it sticks to the road.It builds plaque faster on artery walls but it makes clots harder to clear .
People should get their LP(a) levels in blood measured at least once to be more risk-aware.
