How the hagfish protects itself

 The Hagfish can produce astonishing amounts of slime in seconds when threatened.A single hagfish can release mucus and protein threads that rapidly  expand in sea water into large amounts of slime,helping clog a predator's gills and giving the hagfish a chance to escape.
