Prison on Alcatraz Island that was shut down

 The prison on Alcatraz Island was shut down in 1963,not because of escapes,but because it was too expensive to operate,costing nearly three times more than other prisons due to its isolated location!

         Its isolated location meant supplies,water and fuel had to be shipped in,making it much more expensive than prisons on the mainland!
