Mental health industrial complex

The "mental health industrial complex" refers to the powerful and profitable network of industries, institutions and individuals that benefit from the biomolecular model of mental illness, often at the expense of addressing root social causes. This complex is criticized for its focus on individual, biological explanations, which can increase the consumption of pharmaceuticals and overshadow the role of social factors like poverty, racism ,and inequality in mental distress. It is also seen in systems like mental health courts which can perpetuate power imbalances despite appearing progressive.
