Endangered bird is symbol of New Caledonia

The Kagu,a flightless,ground-nesting bird endemic to New Caledonia,is an endangered species facing threats from introduced predators like dogs, cats, pigs and rats,as well as habitat loss.

They spend their time on the forest floor, foraging for insects and other vertebrates.

The Kagu is a ground-living bird.Luckily the Kagu breeds well in captivity.

In 2024 there are about 1500 kagus left in the world. The Kagu population has stabilised but it still remains an endangered species.
