Vertical farming growing in popularity in Canada

There is a crop of vertical agriculture facilities sprouting across Canada in 2022.

Vertical agriculture allows food to be grown locally,quickly,24/7, year round with little to no impact from extreme weather events.

LED grow lights, hydroponics and automated technology make indoor farming or vertical farming cheaper and commercially viable.

Greens like arugula and kale traditionally grow in 45 to 60 days in open field farms. In vertical farming arugula and kale grow in 18 days from seed to package.

But running an indoor plant factory comes with a lot of challenges;it requires a lot of electricity to power the lights, heaters and humidifiers 24/7.

In Canada vertical farmers have so far been limited to growing fruits and vegetables, tomatoes and vine crops.Vertical farming often focuses on growing leafy greens.

Food staples like rice, wheat and potatoes, grains, oils, proteins and carbohydrates are not grown by vertical farming.
