The oldest street in Montreal

Rue Saint-Paul is Montreal's oldest street.Constructed around 1650,it followed the city's northern boundary fortifications.Back then,Montreal was a walled city.Today,it is hard to believe that an excursion to Mount Royal,a short distance away, risked attack by one of the local Indian tribes such as the Iriquois. The street was paved with cobblestones in 1672 and served for many years as Montreal's main thoroughfare.Much of Rue Saint-Paul is still cobblestoned today.

The street is home to such famous landmarks as the Bonsecours Market and Notre Dame-de Bon Secours Chapel.
