Iceland

Many tourists flock to Iceland to experience its Arctic proximity and natural wonders. The scenery in Iceland is stunning.

Most of Iceland sits atop active volcanoes.

85% of homes in Iceland in 2021 are heated from geothermal energy that comes from underground-from inside the earth.Iceland is a global leader in renewable energy sources and exports its knowhow in harnessing geothermal energy to other countries.

But Iceland is suffering the effects of climate change. It is experiencing warming winters and melting glaciers. However in 2021 Iceland has among the highest greenhouse gas emissions per capita in Europe, driven mostly by industry and agriculture.

The Icelandic government is trying to counteract climate change by planting more trees in the volcanic soil,by restoring wetlands and through the mass electrification of public transit.
